Understanding Prop Firm Challenges

How Prop Firm Challenges Work

A prop firm challenge is a structured evaluation where you trade a simulated account under strict risk rules. Pass it and you receive real funded capital โ€” keeping 80โ€“100% of profits.

1

Profit Target

Grow the account by a set % (usually 8โ€“10%) within the time limit. Calculated from starting balance โ€” not current equity. You must reach it without breaching any risk rules.

2

Max Drawdown

The absolute maximum your account can fall from starting balance. FTMO = 10%, The 5%ers = 5%. Breach it once and the challenge fails immediately โ€” no exceptions.

3

Daily Loss Limit

Maximum loss in a single calendar day (4โ€“5%). FTMO uses trailing daily โ€” calculated from the highest equity that day. Breach this once and the challenge ends.

4

Min Trading Days

Most firms require 3โ€“5 minimum trading days to prevent a lucky one-day pass. You must meet this before the challenge can be marked as passed.

✅ How to Pass

The professional approach

Risk 0.5โ€“1% per trade โ€” at 10% max drawdown you can survive 10โ€“20 consecutive losses.
Aim for 1:2+ R:R โ€” at 1:2 you need only 33% win rate to reach the profit target.
Stop at 2โ€“3% daily loss โ€” don’t push to the limit. Leave buffer for open position moves.
Use this tracker before every trade โ€” know your daily remaining budget before opening positions.

❌ Why Most People Fail

Avoid these mistakes

Overtrading day 1โ€“2 โ€” risking 3โ€“5% per trade to hit target fast. One bad run and it’s over.
Revenge trading โ€” increasing size to recover a losing day, then breaching the daily limit.
Ignoring open P&L โ€” unrealised losses count toward the daily limit. An open trade going against you can breach the rule while you sleep.
No stop loss on news โ€” gaps during high-impact news wipe drawdown budgets in seconds.

Prop Firm Challenge FAQs

Everything you need to know โ€” from how challenges work to what happens after you pass.

A prop firm challenge is a paid evaluation where you trade a simulated account under strict rules. If you meet the profit target without breaching drawdown or daily loss limits, the firm grants you a real funded account โ€” typically $10,000 to $200,000. You keep 80โ€“100% of all profits made.
Static drawdown is calculated from your starting balance and never moves. A 10% static drawdown on $10,000 means you can never fall below $9,000 โ€” period. Trailing drawdown follows your highest equity peak โ€” if you grow to $10,500, the floor rises to $9,450. Trailing is stricter because giving back profits can cause a breach.
Yes โ€” on most prop firms including FTMO, the daily loss limit is calculated on equity, not just closed P&L. If you have an open trade at -$400 and your daily limit is -$500, you only have $100 buffer left. Always check your open floating losses before entering new trades.
For a 10% max drawdown challenge, we recommend 0.5โ€“1% per trade. At 1% risk you can lose 10 consecutive trades before failing. At 0.5% you can survive 20 losses. Use the Position Size Calculator on this site to size every trade correctly.
The challenge fails. Most firms offer a free or paid reset. Some firms like The 5%ers have no time limit โ€” you trade until you hit the target or breach a drawdown rule. Always check your specific firm’s policy before purchasing.
The consistency rule (FTMO and FundedNext at funded stage) states no single day should account for more than 30โ€“40% of total profit. If you make $1,000 total, no single day can account for more than $300 (FTMO). Violating this can result in a failed payout request.
Stop trading immediately. Do not try to recover losses โ€” this is how most challenges are failed. Close open positions in drawdown and wait for the next trading day. A failed day costs you only time. A breached daily limit costs you the entire challenge fee.
Yes โ€” the Session Breakout strategy taught at The Payout Report Academy is designed with prop firm rules in mind. Structured entries at session opens with defined stop losses give clear 1:2+ R:R setups. It avoids weekend holds and news spikes โ€” compliant with virtually all prop firm terms.
With 1% risk per trade, 1:2 R:R and 50% win rate, you generate roughly 1% account growth per trading day โ€” a 10% target achievable in 10โ€“15 trading days. Do not rush. A clean pass at 1% risk is better than a blown challenge at 5% risk. Consistency beats speed every time.
Most firms allow standard forex pairs, metals (Gold, Silver), indices (US30, NAS100) and sometimes energies and crypto. Most prohibit scalping under 1-minute timeframes, news trading within a window of major events, and holding over weekends. Always read the firm’s Terms & Conditions before starting.
