FTMO US Forbidden Practices Explained (and Safe Alternatives)

Trade right, pass faster

Know what FTMO US flags as forbidden, including the newer Best Day Rule anti-hedging clause, and use safer alternatives that still fit your edge.

Start the FTMO US Challenge

Updated: August 15, 2026 Covers the 1-Step and 2-Step FTMO US Challenge MT5 on OANDA infrastructure

Why this matters: Violating FTMO’s Forbidden Trading Practices can lead to trade removal, platform restrictions, disqualification from the Evaluation Process, forfeiture of potential Rewards, or termination. The upside: the US product spells out exactly where the line sits, and there is plenty of room to trade realistically on MT5 in netting/FIFO mode.
What changed since our last update: FTMO added a new forbidden practice aimed at traders who hedge or split trade ideas across multiple days to smooth out the Best Day Rule (see the dedicated section below). FTMO also renamed the funded account to the FTMO Rewards Account, the funded programme is now formally the Signal Provider Program for FTMO US, and a 1-Step FTMO Challenge is now available alongside the original 2-Step path. Ownership also shifted: FTMO Group completed its acquisition of OANDA in December 2025, and FTMO US now operates as a partnership between JV Prop Corporation and OANDA Prop US Corporation. None of this changes the core forbidden practices list, but it does change some of the language you will see in the rulebook.

What counts as “forbidden” on FTMO US

Below is a plain-English translation of the official list, plus the safe behaviors to use instead. Wherever possible, we link you to FTMO’s own pages.

1) Exploiting platform or data errors, or slow feeds

Forbidden: Any strategy that takes advantage of price display errors, delayed updates, or external or slow data feeds. This includes latency arbitrage and tick manipulation.

Safe alternative: Trade off confirmed chart prints and realistic liquidity. If your edge depends on micro-latency between feeds, it will not pass the real-market test.

2) Coordinated or manipulative trading across accounts

Forbidden: Entering combinations of trades for manipulative purposes, especially across connected persons or accounts, or accounts held with other providers. Opening opposite positions across multiple accounts to engineer outcomes is a red flag.

Safe alternative: Keep your trading personal and independent. If you manage a legal-entity account, access is restricted to top management only. Otherwise, no third-party access at all.

3) Breaking terms and conditions or platform rules

Forbidden: Any simulated trades that conflict with the FTMO US General Terms and Conditions, the Signal Provider Terms and Conditions, or MT5 platform rules.

Safe alternative: Build your plan around FTMO’s rules and MT5 netting/FIFO behavior, meaning one position per symbol, with partial closes reducing the oldest portion first.

4) “Unfair advantage” tooling

Forbidden: Using software, AI, ultra-high-speed tools, or mass data entry intended to manipulate, abuse, or overload the system or give you an unfair edge.

Safe alternative: EAs are allowed if they behave like a real trader would. Avoid hyperactive bots that spam the server.

5) Gap trading in sensitive windows

Forbidden: Opening trades right before major news, macroeconomic events, or earnings that could affect the relevant market, or opening trades within two hours or less of a market close that will last two hours or more (gap hunting).

Safe alternative: Enter after the event or after the open stabilizes. Size smaller and document the scenario in your journal.

6) Behavior that is “not like real markets”

Forbidden examples: Overleveraging, one-sided all-in bets, account rolling, or any style that a reasonable person would not apply with their own money. Repeated activity that ramps total exposure, such as the same idea spread across many orders or correlated symbols, also triggers scrutiny.

Safe alternative: Keep risk-per-trade stable, cap total open risk, and diversify entries rather than stacking exposure on one theme.

7) EA hyperactivity and flood protection

Forbidden: Robots that trigger excessive server requests, generally more than 2,000 order-related actions per day, or that overload MT5 with constant modification of dozens of orders.

Safe alternative: Throttle modifications, batch updates, and keep pending orders under platform limits (MT5 accounts typically allow up to 200 pending orders).

8) Personal use only

Forbidden: Letting someone else trade your account, or trading someone else’s account. For entities, only top management may have access.

Safe alternative: If you teach or mentor, keep that activity separate from your personal FTMO US account, and never coordinate entries with students or followers.

9) Circumventing the Best Day Rule with hedging or split trade ideas New for 2026

Forbidden: Using strategies that artificially spread profit across multiple days without proportionally spreading the market risk. FTMO names three specific patterns: hedging or holding opposing positions on the same or highly correlated instruments, and partially closing or managing the same trade idea across multiple trading days, when the purpose is to get around the Best Day Rule.

Safe alternative: Let a trade idea live and die within the timeframe your plan actually calls for. If you scale out, do it for a genuine risk-management reason you can explain, not to spread one idea’s profit thinner across several “best days.” Read the full clause on FTMO’s Forbidden Trading Practices page.

Why EA and martingale-style traders should read this twice: If your system runs hedge legs, opposing baskets, or scales the same idea across several days, the newest clause is aimed squarely at that pattern. It does not ban hedging outright, and it does not ban multi-day trade management. What it bans is using either technique specifically to smooth profit across days and dodge the Best Day Rule (your single most profitable day cannot make up more than roughly 50% of your total positive-day profit on most FTMO Challenge paths). Before you run a martingale, grid, or basket EA on an FTMO US account, check whether its hedge or “recovery” module could be read as this kind of profit smoothing, and be ready to explain the trade logic on its own risk-management merits.

Quick-reference table: forbidden vs. compliant

Risky behavior Why it’s a problem Compliant alternative
Latency/tick arbitrage Exploits feed delay; not replicable on real markets Trade post-print momentum/pullback; avoid cross-feed latency plays
Opposite positions across linked accounts Manipulative, not “real market” One personal plan; no coordinated baskets across people
AI bot spamming thousands of edits Overloads servers; triggers anti-flood Throttle EA; batch edits; respect the roughly 2,000-actions/day guidance
“All-in” one-sided bets Fails reasonable risk rules; not replicable Stable % risk per trade plus total open risk cap
Gap hunting pre-news/close Targets mechanical slippage windows Trade after spreads normalize; half size on events
Third-party login/trading Breaks the personal-use rule You only; entity accounts limited to top management
Hedged legs or split trade ideas across days New Smooths profit to game the Best Day Rule Manage each idea on its own risk logic; explain multi-day holds on their merits

Understand the US product (so you don’t accidentally break rules)

MT5 only, netting and FIFO

FTMO US uses MT5 in netting mode: one position per symbol, with reductions applied FIFO (oldest reduced first). No hedging within a single symbol. Stop and limit levels apply to the netted position.

Details: US vs Global differences • Platform is MT5-only

Simulated futures and expiries

Some instruments are simulated futures. Positions must be closed before expiry; near expiry, symbols switch to “close-only.”

Two paths to a funded account

FTMO US now runs both a classic 2-Step Challenge (Challenge, then Verification) and a newer 1-Step Challenge that compresses the evaluation into a single profit-target phase with a Best Day Rule built in from the start. Pick the format that matches how you actually trade, since you cannot switch mid-evaluation.

Funded stage naming

Once you pass, you trade a FTMO Rewards Account under the Signal Provider Program. Rewards can typically be requested after a minimum holding period once the account is flat and in profit, with most approvals processed quickly once claimed.

EA users: pass the “real-market” test

FTMO US allows discretionary, algorithmic, and EA trading styles, if they behave like a rational, real-market participant. Here is how to stay safe, including the new hedging clause.

EA area Keep it safe by… What to avoid
Order volume Limit pending orders to sane levels (MT5 allows roughly 200 pending orders per account) Hundreds of micro-orders that spam edits
Server requests Throttle to stay well under the roughly 2,000 order-actions/day guidance Frequent modify/cancel loops that trigger anti-flood
Strategy logic Use multi-timeframe confirmations and realistic slippage assumptions Latency/tick sniffing between feeds
Hedge and recovery modules Size hedge legs to genuinely offset risk, and let each trade idea close within its own logic Opposing baskets on correlated symbols used to smooth daily P/L across the week
Third-party EAs Customize parameters; ensure uniqueness across accounts Copy-pasting the same EA settings many other traders are running
Risk control Fixed % per trade; cap total open risk; circuit breaker after a -2R day Grid/martingale growth without hard limits

Gap and news windows: how to avoid grey zones

Before big news

  • Avoid opening right into CPI, NFP, or FOMC. Wait for spreads to stabilize.
  • Cut your usual size by 50 to 75% if you must participate.
  • Prefer a single, A+ attempt, with no re-entries if you miss.

US news policy: News trading FAQ

Around market closes

  • Do not gap hunt within roughly two hours of a multi-hour close.
  • Check Trading Updates for maintenance windows and contract changes.
  • For weekend holds, cap total exposure at 0.75% or less and avoid stacking correlated USD bets.

Build a compliant risk framework

Component Baseline Why it helps
Per-trade risk Intraday: 0.25 to 0.5% • Swing: 0.5 to 1.0% Looks “reasonable” against real-market behavior; smooths equity swings
Total open risk cap 1.0% or less intraday • 1.5% or less swing Prevents “one-sided all-in” exposure
Daily circuit breaker Stop trading at -2R or a set cushion before the Daily Loss limit Stops tilt; protects against a breach via floating P/L
Session filter Trade your best session only (London or NY) Reduces over-trading and flood-like behavior
Best Day check New Review your equity curve weekly for any single day over roughly 40 to 45% of total positive-day profit Gives you an early warning before you brush up against the Best Day Rule

“Trading according to a real market”: the litmus test

FTMO US asks a simple question: would a rational person trade this way with their own money on a real market? If yes, you are likely fine. If not, you are drifting toward forbidden territory. Use this quick self-audit before you click:

  1. Am I sizing consistently, not with random spikes?
  2. Is total exposure capped across correlated symbols?
  3. Am I opening after spreads normalize?
  4. Would I run this exact plan at a live broker, with the same stops and targets?
  5. Could I explain this trade, including any hedge leg, to a risk manager in two minutes?

Background: Why FTMO treats gambling-style trading as a red flag

Common mistakes that look “forbidden” (and fixes)

Looks like Reality Fix
Dozens of micro-orders EA trailing logic is too chatty Increase step size; batch modifications; keep orders under 200
Spiky lot sizes Manual sizing by feel Use a fixed % risk model; pre-compute lot size from stop distance
Event-time entries FOMO around CPI/NFP Rule: wait 3 to 5 minutes post-release; one attempt only; half size
Correlated stacking Long EURUSD, GBPUSD, and XAUUSD at once Treat this as one macro USD bet; cap total exposure
Copy-like behavior Friends trading the same EA and parameters Customize logic and parameters; do not coordinate timing
Hedge basket held for days New Recovery module offsetting a losing leg on a correlated pair Resolve the hedge within the plan’s normal timeframe; document the risk reason

US-specific notes (so your plan matches policy)

  • News and weekends allowed: FTMO US permits trading during news and holding overnight or over the weekend. Still avoid the “gap hunting” windows described in Forbidden Trading Practices.
  • Account type US: Leverage of up to 1:33, with no news or overnight restrictions built into the account type itself. Simulated futures must be closed before expiry.
  • Simulated environment, no regulatory oversight: All stages are simulated (Evaluation and Rewards). FTMO US is delivered by JV Prop Corporation (Evaluation Process) together with OANDA Prop US Corporation (FTMO Rewards Account, Signal Provider Program). None of the services are subject to oversight by a financial regulator, and you do not have a client relationship with OANDA Corporation itself, so standard broker protections do not apply.
  • 1-Step or 2-Step: Choose upfront. The 1-Step path is faster but runs tighter drawdown rules and applies the Best Day Rule from day one of the Challenge.

Credibility snapshot

FTMO reports 3.5M+ customers worldwide and $500M+ paid in rewards, with a 4.8 Trustpilot score, as of 2026. FTMO Group completed its acquisition of OANDA in December 2025, which is why the US product now runs on OANDA-linked infrastructure. Treat these as signals of platform maturity, not edge guarantees. Your job is still the same: trade like a professional and avoid grey zones.

FAQ

Is hedging banned on FTMO US?
Not outright. MT5 netting mode already prevents hedging within a single symbol. Across correlated symbols, hedging becomes a problem specifically when it is used to spread one trade idea’s profit across multiple days to get around the Best Day Rule.
Can I still use an Expert Advisor on FTMO US?
Yes. EAs and algorithmic strategies are allowed as long as they trade like a reasonable real-market participant, stay under the server-request guidance, and do not exploit feed errors or the Best Day Rule.
What is the Best Day Rule?
It limits how much of your total positive-day profit can come from a single day, so results have to look consistent rather than one lucky session carrying the whole evaluation. The exact percentage and phases it applies to vary by challenge type, so check FTMO’s Trading Objectives page for the current figure.
What leverage does FTMO US offer?
Up to 1:33 on the account type US, with no built-in restrictions on holding through news or over weekends, though simulated futures must close before expiry.
Is FTMO US regulated?
No. FTMO US is a simulated trading and educational service delivered by JV Prop Corporation and OANDA Prop US Corporation, and it is not subject to oversight by any financial regulator.
